University General Education Requirements

All undergraduate students at the Academy of Wisconsin–Madison are required to fulfill a minimum set of common university general didactics requirements to ensure that every graduate acquires the essential cadre of an undergraduate education. This cadre establishes a foundation for living a productive life, being a citizen of the world, affectionate artful values, and engaging in lifelong learning in a continually changing world. Diverse schools and colleges will have requirements in addition to the requirements listed below. Consult your advisor for assistance, as needed. General Education
  • Latitude—Humanities/Literature/Arts: six credits
  • Breadth—Natural Scientific discipline: 4 to 6 credits, consisting of one 4- or 5-credit course with a laboratory component; or 2 courses providing a full of 6 credits

College of Letters & Scientific discipline Caste Requirements: Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

Students pursuing a Available of Science caste in the Higher of Letters & Science must consummate all of the requirements below. The College of Messages & Science allows this major to exist paired with either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science caste requirements.

Bachelor of Science Caste REQUIREMENTS

Mathematics Complete ii courses of 3+ credits at the Intermediate or Avant-garde level in MATH, COMP SCI, or STAT subjects. A maximum of one course in each of COMP SCI and STAT subjects counts toward this requirement.
Strange Language Complete the third unit of a foreign language.
L&S Breadth Consummate:
• 12 credits of Humanities, which must include at to the lowest degree half dozen credits of Literature; and
• 12 credits of Social Science; and
• 12 credits of Natural Science, which must include 6 credits of Biological science and 6 credits of Physical Science.
Liberal Arts and Science Coursework Complete at least 108 credits.
Depth of Intermediate/Advanced Coursework Complete at to the lowest degree 60 credits at the Intermediate or Advanced level.
Major Declare and complete at to the lowest degree one major.
Full Credits Complete at to the lowest degree 120 credits.
UW-Madison Feel Complete both:
• 30 credits in residence, overall, and
• xxx credits in residence after the 86th credit.
Quality of Piece of work • 2.000 in all coursework at UW–Madison
• two.000 in Intermediate/Advanced level coursework at UW–Madison

Non–50&S Students PURSUING AN L&Southward MAJOR

Not–L&South students who have permission from their schoolhouse/college to pursue an boosted major within L&S only need to fulfill the major requirements. They practice non need to consummate the L&South Degree Requirements above.

Requirements for the Major

Communication Arts offers two options within the major:

  • Communication Science and Rhetorical Studies
  • Radio–Television–Film

Students declare 1 of the two options and complete a minimum of 10 courses and at least xxx credits in the major. Delight note that COM ARTS courses numbered below 200 also as COM ARTS 605, COM ARTS 614, and COM ARTS 615 practise non count in the major.

Students must select one of the following options:

  • Communication Arts: Communication Science and Rhetorical Studies

  • Communication Arts: Radio-Tv set-Film

Residence and Quality of Work

  • 2.000 GPA in all COM ARTS and major courses
  • ii.000 GPA on at least 15 credits of upper-level work in the major, in residence.  (Major courses with Intermediate or Advanced level are considered upper-level).
  • 15 credits of COM ARTS major courses (200-699) taken on the UW-Madison campus.1

Honors in the Major in Communication Arts

Students may use to pursue Honors in the Communication Arts major in consultation with a Communication Arts undergraduate counselor. To exist accepted students must have:

  • Completed the fundamentals grade and the ii core courses for their alleged option and
  • Earned a 3.500 GPA in all COM ARTS courses

Honors in the Communication Arts Major Requirements

To earn Honors in the Major in Communication Arts, students must satisfy both the requirements for the major (to a higher place) and the following boosted requirements:

  • iii.300 Academy GPA
  • 3.500 GPA for all COM ARTS major courses
  • Complete the requirements for the alleged major option, to include:
    • All theory, history, criticism courses taken to meet the regular major requirements inside the declared selection must exist 400 level or higher.
    • 1 additional theory, history, criticism course at the 400 level or higher.
    • Iii theory, history and criticism courses must be completed on campus.1

University Degree Requirements

Total Degree To receive a available's degree from UW–Madison, students must earn a minimum of 120 degree credits. The requirements for some programs may exceed 120 degree credits. Students should consult with their college or department advisor for information on specific credit requirements.
Residency Degree candidates are required to earn a minimum of 30 credits in residence at UW–Madison. "In residence" means on the UW–Madison campus with an undergraduate degree classification. "In residence" credit also includes UW–Madison courses offered in distance or online formats and credits earned in UW–Madison Study Abroad/Study Abroad programs.
Quality of Work Undergraduate students must maintain the minimum course indicate average specified by the schoolhouse, college, or academic plan to remain in practiced academic continuing. Students whose academic functioning drops below these minimum thresholds will be placed on academic probation.
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of core content in either of the two tracks: Communication Scientific discipline and Rhetorical Studies or Radio-TV-Movie.
  2. Conduct theoretical, historical, and critical analyses of communication arts, demonstrating employ of enquiry methodologies and analytic tools/techniques advisable to their tracks.
  3. Demonstrate an power to communicate effectively in writing, orally, or via the creation of media content (e.g., digital, film).

The Department of Communication Arts encourages students to utilize the knowledge and skills they attain through coursework to professional settings. Internships and function-time jobs at television networks, nonprofit organizations, talent agencies, magazines, radio stations, advertising agencies, product companies, government agencies, and other communication-related businesses assistance students gain work-related experience and explore career options. Advising emails and postings provide communication arts majors with information on opportunities across the country.

Studying Abroad

Communications arts majors are encouraged to look at study away programs and opportunities across the earth. Our students have studied in cities such as London, Rome, Tel Aviv, Prague, Galway, Sydney, Madrid, Bologna, Cape Town, Paris, Copenhagen, and Buenos Aires. When planning for their semester abroad, students should retrieve beyond courses required for their major. Students are encouraged to take courses from a variety of subjects to satisfy requirements and constituent credits for their degree.

research opportunities

Advice science research team members gain easily-on enquiry experience. Undergraduate research assistants may learn to code and enter data, interview participants, gather and gear up research materials, run experiments, and perform other activities required to complete a research study. Reading and writing assignments related to the research activities are assigned throughout the semester. Opportunities to participate in a research squad vary from semester to semester.
